• Futurechromes S.L. was among the 10 selected companies
to attend and present its technology at the very first edition of the Barcelona Activa CONNECTIO Pitch, focused on sustainability-related solutions! The participation to this event on June 12th, corroborates once more our implication on sustainability, with our technology, based on transparent self-regulating photochromic films, positioning as a promising solution to improve comfort and energy consumption efficiency in buildings.
• We congratulate and acknowledge Lucía Luque Benítez
for successfully achieving her internship on photochromic formulations for transparent coatings and printable inks. Below is an example demonstrating reversible photochromic behaviour of the printed sample containing different photochromic formulations applied on different sections
• Futurechromes is proud to announce that, for the first time,
we have successfully installed “Adhesive Smart Photochromic Window Films on the train windows operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC)”. The train service line passes through the Vallès Occidental in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. This exciting achievement is part of the “Vagó de la Ciència” initiative, a collaboration between UAB and FGC, which transforms a train carriage into an immersive learning experience and further to provide citizens knowledge regarding the scientific transformations happening in day to day life. This carriage is adorned with scientific facts and curiosities on a selected topic, along with QR codes that offer access to podcasts and more in-depth information.
This year is the 2nd edition of the Vagó de la Ciència, the focus is on raising awareness about sustainability, climate change, and CO2 emission reduction. As our company values are deeply aligned with these aspects and is a part of the UAB campus, Futurechromes has contributed to this initiative by providing innovative technology i.e., photochromic window films. These films are designed to regulate solar heat gain, reducing the need for air conditioning and ventilation systems in both buildings and vehicles, ultimately helping in lowering CO2 emissions.
The films will remain applied to the carriage windows for an entire academic year, providing a real-world environment for testing this pilot prototype and gathering crucial data on the material’s performance and durability under varying weather conditions. This remarkable opportunity allows Futurechromes to validate its technology in a REAL setting while contributing to a broader conversation about sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The development of the window films has been carried out along the projects: SOLAR, supported by the grant CPP2021-008883 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by the European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR
• Futurechromes is on the path of making significant strides in its journey to scale up!
With the help of ITENE technology centre, we have accomplished extruded films for the very first time using our innovative technology. This method ensures good transparency and, of course, faster photochromism than conventional extruded photochromic films. In fact, now we can make up to 20 m long rollable photochromic extruded films!!
Thanks to the Bionanopolys Open Innovation Test Bed (ITENE, CIDAUT, AXIA), which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme under grant agreement No. 953206.

The Horizon 2020 project Bionanopolys unites 27 scientific and industrial partners from all over Europe to offer materials with an improved performance for packaging, textile, agriculture, cosmetics and hygiene, pharma or food. The consortium, which is coordinated by ITENE, is developing an Open Innovation Test Bed for innovative bionanomaterial development in Europe. To speed up the introduction of biobased nano-enabled materials into the market, Bionanopolys creates a network of 14 pilot plants and their complementary services. Five pilot plants focus on the development of bionanomaterials from biomass, three pilot plants are dedicated to bionanocomposites and six plants aim at manufacturing bio-based nanoproducts in order to reach a wide range of applications in different sectors. The service portfolio is offered to companies and research groups in the field and calls for a joint approach to pave the way for a greener future for us and following generations. www.bionanopolys.eu
• Futurechromes has successfully submitted for a NewSkin demo-case project,
Futurechromes has successfully submitted for a NewSkin demo-case project, which has been approved and is now running. Because of the promising technologies and the broad possibility of applications, our spinoff has been selected by the EU-funded NewSkin Open Innovation Test Bed (OITB) platform to make a step forward towards industrialisation.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 862100 (NewSkin) and will be carried out in collaboration with NewSkin OITB service providers LEITAT and KIT.
NewSkin will help Futurechromes to scale-up the fabrication process of its core technology related to nanocapsules-based photochromic films and to validate the resistance of the films under real weather conditions. With this project, Futurechromes will finally explore another scaled-up approach for the nanocapsules-based films production, beyond the lab-scale, marking another milestone towards the industrialisation of our fast-responsive and highly stable photochromic films.
